Annular blowout preventer
Features:
Used in conjunction with hydraulic control system, the annular BOP seals off the annulus of different sizes when pipes are in use in the hole. An annular BOP can also seal off the annular space which is formed by Kelly, coring tool, cables, wire rope etc. and wellbore when no pipe is in it.

Ram BOP
Description:
The ram BOP is designed to seal off the tubular annulus or the well. With the ram BOP in the closed position, such operation as circulating drilling fluid, re-leasing pressure and killing the well can be special circumstances; the ram BOP can shear the pipe in the hole to seal off the well. If the ram BOP has variable bore rams, it can seal off the annular space between the casing and pipes whose sizes are at the mini-mum and maximum of the ram's range.
